Pilgrim Europe: 10. Places of pilgrim Europeage Italy is, of course, the pre-eminent pilgrim Europe country of Europe, since Rome is the center of the Catholic faith. A booklet called Sanctuaries of Italy, put out by the Tourist Department, gives full details of twenty major pilgrim Europe goals and many minor ones. Some goals, leaving aside all mention of the supreme one, Rome, are of obvious drawing power, such places as Assisi, for St. Francis (the Franciscan Order was cradled there in the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli); Siena, for St. Catherine (her house is sought annually by reverent throngs); and Padua, for St. Anthony, who is generally called simply "the Saint" (il Santo).

The story of young Bernadette birous, whose visions of the Virgin in 1858 started this Pyrenean village i its road to pilgrim Europe fame, is one of the greatly dramatic stories of all tin as you may judge by reading (if you missed it) The Song of Bernade by Franz Werfel, a book that came out during World War II and quickljii attained best-seller status. Werfel was a Jew, but he wrote with und guised sympathy for the sincerity of the humble Catholic miller's daugh ter. Hollywood brought the story to millions, of all faiths or none, it had a considerable impact on the movie public. |
