Icelandic To English Translation: GENEVA BIBLE, a translation of the Bible into English, published at Geneva in 1560. It was chiefly the work of English Protestant refugees in that city and owes much to an earlier translation by William Tyndale. It was the first English Bible which recognized the division into verses, the first to omit the Apocrypha, and the first to adopt the Roman instead of the obsolescent black type. Because it stated, in translating a phrase from Genesis (3:7), that Adam and Eve made themselves some "breeches," it was sometimes referred to as the "Breeches Bible." See BIBLE—17. History of the English Bible.
