It has had a long and checkered hie of occupation by the usual successive conquerors of Mediterranean lands, but upon Napoleon's downfall it passed into the hands o Great Britain at the will of the Maltese people. The italicized words tel an honest and interesting story, for few portions of any European colonia empire have ever been incorporated without some show of force.
