Hotel In Monte Carlo: The Old Beach and New Beach,both being hotel in monte carlos of top quality at Monte Carlo's small but elegant strand, are summer members of the luxury family. All of the above except the Metropole are under a single management. The Monte Carlo Palace is the most widely known hostelry, partly because of its superlative cuisine and its well-stocked wine cellar.
Sports have a year-round season, one of the most exciting events for spectators being the January Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo, a monster motor race in which competitors drive stock cars to Monte Carlo from such diverse starting points as Athens, Glasgow, Lisbon, Munich, Oslo, Stockholm and Palermo. They "rally" at a point along the way, each with an appropriate handicap, and enter Monaco all on the same day.
Sports for participants include golf (a lofty course high up on a plateau of Mont-Agel; bus), tennis (21 courts at the beach), sailing regattas and, of course, swimming. In the winter, and sometimes also in June, pigeon shooting is a feature of the Casino terrace, with live pigeons being released from boxes. For the chief event of this class, the so-called "Grand Criterium de Monte-Carlo," in March, there is a prize of 3,000,000 francs ($87,000) plus 10 gold medals.
Pleasures of the evening center largely around the Casino and its world-caliber program. The Monte Carlo Opera, staged in the Casino, has regained much of the fame it enjoyed before the war and the annual ballet program always includes the world's leading troupes and individual stars. Orchestral concerts and recitals have their innings and of course the Casino also finds room for a sumptuous nightclub, which it calls simply Le Cabaret.
