GUSTAV II, gus'tav (1594-1632), king of Sweden. Gustav II (better known as Gustavus Adolphus) led the Swedish intervention in Germany during the Thirty Years' War and is sometimes called the "savior of Protestantism." During his reign Sweden emerged as one of Europe's great powers. Although his fame is based primarily on his military feats, he also dealt effectively with Sweden's domestic problems.
