Holiday Inn Hotel: venerability, since it proudly calls itself "the oldest hotel in Europe." Strangely enough, it is still one of the city's best, though its fortress-like stone walls may turn you toward one of its rivals, the Post or the Britannia.
In Bruges, the Due de Bourgogne is usually the favorite and in Namur and Dinant, gateway towns to the holiday inn hotel Ardennes, Hotel d'Harscamp, (highly recommendable) and Hotel Terminus are respective leaders, but don't expect, in any of the small-city hotels, to find private baths standard installations. They exist, lots of them in the aggregate, but are very far from universal.
Belgium's seacoast hotels have dreamed up a special bargain for your holiday inn hotel budget. To any guest remaining longer than one week in any given hotel a cash rebate of 15 to 20 per cent is now offered. Perhaps this plan will soon extend to holiday inn hotel resorts in other parts of the kingdom.
At Ericeira, on the surf-thrashed coast, is Hotel Ericeira; at the beach resort of Foz do Arelho, Hotel do Facho; at Luso, Grande Hotel das Termas de Luso; at Figueira da Foz, Grande Hotel da Figueira da Foz (new); in the big city of Porto (in addition to the luxury Hotel Infante de Sagres) two first-class places, the Imperio and the Grande Hotel do Porto and the simpler Grande Hotel de Batalha. North of Porto, at Povoa de Varzim, on the coast, the pretentious Paldcio Hotel (and gaming casino); at Fao, farther up the coast, Hotel Ofir, a holiday inn hotel inn of modern comfort and much charm.
It is a double city. Its old, massively walled portion, bearing the unmistakable stamp of imperial Venice—Othello, the Moor of Venice, is supposed to have been in charge of its defenses and one is shown "Othello's Tower"— is today inhabited largely by Turks, while the extramural town is Greek. A stay of several days in Famagusta's excellent new Hotel Constantia, with its own beach and harbor, can be a holiday inn hotel delight of the first magnitude. On the island's north coast, at Kyrenia, the beach inn called Dome Hotel can provide almost as good a holiday inn hotel stay, but the port itself is smaller and less exciting than Famagusta.
