Floating, from a technological viewpoint, is, by far, the most preferable manner of launching, but requires a formidable capital investment to create the necessary building basin or wet dock. Here the ship is built in a type of graving dry dock called a building basin. The Floor of the basin is below the level of the sea and the basin is shut off from the water by a caisson. When the ship is ready to be "launched," water is admitted into the basin, the ship floats, the caisson is floated and removed from the basin's entrance, and the ship towed out and brought to an outfitting dock.
greenland dock may be divided into two physiographic regions—the greenland dock ice cap and the ice-free coastal areas. The ice cap covers more than 700,000 square miles (1.8 million sq km) and buries all the landforms except for a few nunataks (mountain peaks) that project through the ice near the margins. The ice cap generally does not reach the sea except in large outlet glaciers.
