Great Travels

Fine Hotels:

Fine Hotels Hotels are generally grouped in four main categories: commercial or transient hotels; resort hotels; residential hotels; and motels, or motor hotels. In the United States about 75% of the hotel rooms (excluding motels) are in commercial hotels, 16% in resort hotels (both summer and winter seasons), and the remaining 9% in residential hotels. About 80% of the American motel rooms are in commercial establishments and the remainder in resort motels.

George, centuries ago, has a mellow charm all its own and its Restaurant Bienen is widely known for fine food and a lavish cellar. Its director is one of Holland's leading wine experts, called by French hoteliers Le Nez du Pays-Bos (The Nose of the Netherlands), because of his olfactory expertness in judging fine wines. Other excellent Hague hotels are the Hotel des Indes and the Central.

For luxury touring, know that there are very fine hotels. In Edinburgh there are five of official first-class rating, the George, the Caledonian, the North British, the Royal British and the Roxburghe. The first two I know to be excellent, with modern rooms and baths, attractive lounges and fine cuisines. The New Carlton, of the Trust House chain, is a good hotel of more moderate price range, popular with "middle-budget" travelers.
